LIKE SMELL OF SMOKE ON YOUR CLOTHES. comprises collages crafted from a collection of family images I had preserved prior to my departure from India, in October 2020. They embody a series of internal monologues I engage in, infused with aphorisms drawn from popular culture. In this project emerging from within my family photographs, I explore the intricacies and contours of my heritage and moments of trauma, hopefully in a thought-provoking format where humour often serves as an instrument to both channel and articulate pain.
The project was conceived during the BEING SOUTH ASIAN PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP with Arts Council England, University of the Arts London, and Gunnersbury Park Museum in 2021. Mahenderpal Sorya, a Film London Flamin Fellow, led the workshop.
